Always leaves tell- tale wrinkles on the border of the slick. Also, contrary to popular belief, and although all songs present were. NO COPY OF THIS. LP WAS EVER RELEASED IN 1 963. A few of VERSION 1s have been found. With the “BRACKETS” [VJ] logo on the label. A ll official versions must have all words “INTRODUCING THE BEATLES” and THE. It is always be a FAKE. Featured song titles “PLEASE, PLEASE ME” and ASK. ME WHY” replacing “P. I LOVE YOU” and “LOVE ME DO found only on VERSION 1 copies. VERSION 2 was released in. The labels varied with either the Black. “Oval” logo, or the. SILVER “VJ” logo, or a Black Background with SILVER “Oval” logo, or the rare. Or SILVER “VJ” in Block Style print, or Black. With the SILVER “BRACKETS” logo [VJ]. In rare cases, some VERSION 2 records can also be found with a 45 rpm label as well. FAKES that feature a Medium Sized. SILVER BRACKETS [VJ] LOGO printed on an all Black label. (Real ones have a much smaller logo). All VERSION 2 covers are “Column Back / Titles on Back”. N o copy of any of the. STEREO VERSION 2 discs with a regular sized Rainbow label and the “Oval” logo are known to exist. Although back in 1964. At Vee Jay , anything would have been possible. SOME IMPORTANT TESTS FOR AUTHENTICITY. TEST #1 An obvious visual test is the “SHADOW” test. It was originally assumed that when George Harrison’s “SHADOW”. Appeared on the right side of the front of the album cover, that this was a definitive sign of authenticity. It was later discovered that. Some elaborate FAKES also had this feature, therefore, although his shadow must be there, its appearance alone does not define. The LP as being authentic. TEST #2 A 100% CONCLUSIVE test is the “HONEY” test. Of the jacket and song title A TASTE OF. On ALL FAKES , in letters “H” and “E” , the top left corners of the letters are not solidly printed with black ink missing. This is THE most definitive test recognizing authenticity. All FAKE covers (especially back panel) are poorly photo copied. Examples of original VERSION 1 COLUMN BACKS , but due to their poor quality, they’re subject to many subtle inconsistencies. Which can be spotted by any trained eye, and of course the “HONEY” test illustrates one of these errors. Also, in reference to the. Back of the outer jacket, there are other “INK” tests however most have not been confirmed to be 100% CONCLUSIVE , but NO. FAKE HAS EVER PASSED THIS TEST. TEST #3 The “FLAP TEST ” requires inspecting of the inside of the jacket’s opening. In publications dedicated to pointing out. Differences between authentic and fake records and covers, it’s stated and documented that specific covers were found to have. NO FLAPS at all. Previously that would have referred to ALL FAKES. H ow all collectors accurately identify authentic collectibles. Requires a number of facts. Previously, the conventional thinking was that all authentic covers had to have 1/4 flaps at their inner. Top and bottom of the cover, and that ones with NO FLAPS had to be FAKE. But in 1998 a few of VERSION 1 (“Titles On Back”). Covers were found on the WEST COAST with NO FLAPS at all , yet they passed every other test relating to authenticity. Remember that Vee Jay had hired more than one firm with respect to the construction and printing of these covers i. That being the case, naturally t here would have been obvious differences in how both of these companies produced a. What we have stated here was always suspected, and in 1998 it was confirmed. All r ealists have suspected that. There could never have been only 1 or 2 legitimate covers as a sample of any production run with NO FLAPS. That approximately 79,000 MONO & ONLY 2,202 STEREO VERSION 1 albums were ever produced including all “AD BACKS”. “BLANK BACKS” & “COLUMN BACKS” (or “Titles On Back”). Actually there is further evidence that possibly around 5,000 to. 10,000 more VERSION 1s (probably in MONO) had found there way into the mainstream of overall sales. When one considers the. Way that Vee Jay was being run in 1964 , nothing would be surprising. W ith legal issues hanging over their heads, in 1964 stated. To by our eye witness who worked at Vee Jay , there had always been a sense of urgency to move all their products out the door. As soon as possible, regardless of their characteristics or appearance. Initia l VERSION 1 covers were assembled some time in. December 1963 and also early January 1964. But like everything else that went on there, imagine what the quality control must. Have been like in those chaotic days. It had always thought that since “COLUMN BACK” jackets spotted so infrequently, could. Even though these facts have come to light, we. Know that there are those who remain rigidly attached to the original ideas of ultra conservatives, refusing to alter their thinking. Even when faced with concrete evidence. One thing that will never change is the fact that t here are many authenticity tests, and. This cover PASSES ALL OF THEM including the all important, 100% CONCLUSIVE “HONEY” test. So with that said, is it even. Worth discussing anything else? Certainly it is, however w e must c onsider that if any cover’s FLAPS are either 1/4 or if there are. NO FLAPS, AS LONG AS ALL OTHER TESTS ARE PASSED , the cover m ust be considered authentic. The theory that the only rules at Vee Jay were…. That in 1964 there were no rules at all. Regarding the existence of these covers, until circa 1993 it was thought, because there had been so many. Counterfeits produced over the years, this caused all concerned to believe that there were no legitimate copies ever released. But when a real one turned up in 1993 , there was quite a stir in the collector’s market. Right around that time, a well know. Collector came across another authentic copy. This was verified by other well known experts and it confirms that indeed the. LP known today as the STEREO VERSION 1 ” COLUMN BACK” or “TITLES ON BACK” really exists. In what quantity, no. One will ever know for sure since precise production figures do not exist. However, an educated guess would tell anyone that. There certainly had to have been quite a few more than the 2 mentioned here! Many are estimated to be in the hands of some. Private collectors today, most of whom realize the value of such a rare LP. Logically no record company would EVER have had. A production run of any product in quantities smaller than at least in the thousands. TEST #4 Read the “Trail Off Area”. This area of the record on most if not all FAKES is always wider than legit copies. GENUINE copies, this area varies between 3/4 & 7/8 but on FAKES it is often anywhere from 1 to 1 1/4. Most (but not all). Legitimate albums normally had raised relief machine stamped logos in the “Trail Off” areas. Since all machine stamps are very. Hard to copy or duplicate , FAKES very often have no markings or only hand scratched ones. The most common machine stamps. Are from AUDIO MATRIX (AR) or the ARP logo. Another trait of all FAKES is that they are pressed on much thinner vinyl. Always c heck for thickness by comparing an. LP that in doubt to a known legitimate copy and you’ll see the difference. On the back of the jacket, “B” in “BEATLES” at the top right in FAKES has a noticeable ink irregularity in the lower. Left inner section of the letter. In the REAL covers, the “B” is printed clearly with no flaws. Check out this feature against known. TEST #7 – On the back of the jacket, left of “MISERY” , all the FAKES have a very noticeable ink irregularity in the north/south. Some refer to this as an INK BUMP. It is very easily spotted. TEST #8 – If the label’s color band has NO color GREEN in its lower to middle left side, record is FAKE. TEST #9 – Matrix Numbers are 63-3402 & 63-3403. Some job numbers are 5702 & 5689 preceded by a small triangle. IDs / Stampings are either AUDIO MATRIX, ARP, MR. Hand etchings are 6-29-63 , RA or A. All others or lack thereof are FAKES. TEST #10 – O. Of a gloss to the paper stock used. On back glossiness or sheen may. Appears to be a completely FLAT WHITE STOCK. It’s a FAKE. (SEE SECTION 14 BELOW FOR FURTHER DESCRIPTION OF “FLAP” TEST EXCEPTIONS). It is important to note, THE. Most “FAKED” LP was the STEREO. VERSION 1 “Column Back” album. FAKES feature the song. Titles on the outer jacket and record label: P. I LOVE YOU” and “LOVE ME DO. However when you play a FAKE , these songs. Are normally NOT on the disc. Instead you’ll probably hear. ” PLEASE, PLEASE ME” and “ASK ME WHY”. A few exceptions have. Turned up playing P. I LOVE YOU” & “LOVE ME DO , but in most cases, these usually turn out to be FAKES. Also note that even. Though the outer jacket illustrates the word “STEREOPHONIC” at the top of the Front cover in GRAY on WHITE background, you. W on’t EVER find the word “STEREO” anywhere on the record label and the recording is in MONO as well. Contrary to popular belief, there were NEVER any “REISSUES” of VERSION 1 or VERSION 2 LPs. And if you have seen any. Version of this LP with a stock photo on the front with DARK BROWN border, or cover has YELLOW haze to it, it’s FAKE! Mind that Vee Jay NEVER sealed these albums so if you have one that is sealed, there is good chance that it is a FAKE! Retail store or a dealer SEALED copies of these records. Recently it has come to our attention that some sellers feel they know all there is to know about this LP by posting bogus info. For example, some state that unless “MICROGROOVE” appears on the label, the record is FAKE. Variations that do NOT have either “LONG PLAYING” or “MICROGROOVE” on the label, and yet they are all legit pressings. There are some who have stated that if you see the word “STEREO” , it is not a legit pressing. We have NEVER seen. The word “STEREO” on any fake label. B ut if it DOES appear on the label, it’s a uthentic. And also there are some who have actually. Stated that any STEREO OUTER JACKET offering the song titles “LOVE ME DO” and P. LOVE YOU is a FAKE! THESE PEOPLE GETTING THEIR INFORMATION? Although rarely seen, every VERSION 1 STEREO COLUMN BACK features. “LOVE ME DO” and P. A well know collector, presently has a. “MONO” cover, and another has 2 “STEREO COVERS” in their possession, none. These are small numbers, but we point. Runs in single digit or such small quantities. Even for them it wouldn’t have made sense. We’ve had people write in and ask WHY DO PAUL’S HANDS NOT APPEAR ON THE FRONT COVER? Introducing The Beatles RARE Version 1 MONO Vinyl LP Album VJLP 1062 US VEE-JAY
This is an original and authentic copy of “Introducing the Beatles” #VJLP 1062 mono. It is in the version 1 format as it contains the songs “Love Me Do” and P. Vee-Jay got into a costly legal battle with Capitol and quickly lost their publishing rights. Prior to this they had replaced those two songs on version 1 with “Ask Me Why” and “Please please Me” which is referred to as Version 2. As I understand it, this is the most heavily counterfeited album of all time. We came across this album in a private collection and quickly had it authenticated by an appraiser. It IS an ORIGINAL and AUTHENTIC copy. Some of the more common characteristics found on ORIGINAL COVERS. Covers-front and back-must have slicks that are either glossy or semi-glossy. Printing on covers must be of high quality and professional looking. Back cover lists contents in two columns. Stereo copies must meet one of the following conditions. Back cover pictures 25 color photos of other Vee-Jay albums. This copy is commonly known as the “Ad Back” cover. Back cover is totally blank; a completely white slick with no print whatsoever. Back cover lists content in two columns, almost always containing. Only a couple of original copies have been verified listing. Some of the more common characteristics found on ORIGINAL DISCS. Labels have “THE BEATLES” and the title “INTRODUCING THE BEATLES” above the center hole. Only gloss or semi-gloss rainbow/colorband labels are used on originals. All original labels have bright, sharp silver print. The vinyl trail-off -the gap between the end of the last track and the edge of the label usually measures from 7/8″ to 1″ wide, but never greater. The rainbow/colorband that circles the perimeter of an original label is of high resolution, with smooth, gradual changes in color. The vinyl trail-off area on over 90% of all originals has one or more of the following mechanical Stampings. The letters “MR” inside of a circle. The Beatles and the title are both above the spindle hole, a very clear sign of a fake (Where the title and/or the Beatles appears under the spindle hole). A very small MR does appear inside of a circle in the deadwax. Please go through all of the pictures, and feel free to ask any questions. This record was cleaned and tested. Vinyl and cover are both in VG condition (I went low on the grading). This is a super-rare find! [650608 – E04A – SI]. More Details The sleeve is back pasted in design with the tracklisting on the rear in two columns with the VJ brackets logo centred at the top of the cover above the title of the album which appears in huge black letters all tracks listed are in a thick black print without any of the text missing. The front image clearly shows Georges shadow to the right side. The way this sleeve was manufactured you can clearly see a top & bottom internal flap. The labels are colorband deep groove with silver text featuring the oval VeeJay logo with the title & artist in small print below the logo & above the spindle hole the tracklisting and song credits are left justified and doesnt have Long Playing & Microgroove text. In the run-out groove there is clearly machine stamped Audio Matrix and the MR logo Side A has the date 6-29-63 hand scratched and both sides have had scratched matrices. Condition The sleeve is really nice with only some light general wear mostly to the edges the mostly white back has a little discolouration from age & and the spine has faded a little but all text is still present and readable importantly there are no rips or splits. The labels has only a couple of light spindle marks to indicate it has been played the vinyl shows a few light surface scuffs and the occasional light scratch. We have professionally cleaned & play tested and can confirm that these are all mostly cosmetic and displays no major deterioration in sound quality. A really nice example of this very hard to find over fifty year old original pressing. I Saw Her Standing There 2. Ask Me Why 7. Please Please Me 8. Baby Its You 9. Do You Want To Know A Secret 10. Introducing The Beatles – Version Two. THE BEATLES Introducing The Beatles 1964 US 12-track STEREO LP on the black & silver Vee-Jay label & hand scratched matrices in the vinyl run off area pasted picture sleeve. This is the second version where Love Me Do & P. I LoveYou were replaced with Please Please Me & Ask Me Why. The stereo releases of this album were few & far between often Vee-Jay used STEREOPHONIC stickers on an otherwise mono cover as in this case. The vinyl would be graded as VG-/VG with several obvious surface scuffs but none that affect play. The rarity of stereo copies of this release cannot be overstated VJLP1062 Most items in our store will be better than Very Good condition (also referred to as excellent) – the majority of items are nearer Like New which is the equivalent of a Mint grading. [211799 – E02A – SI]. Background This was the first Beatles album released in America with the version two of the album very quickly following version one into the shops. The reason for the two versions of the album was that Beechwood Music took out an injunction against Vee-Jay because they didnt have the rights to issue the tracks that had previously appeared on the Love Me Do single. Vee-Jay consequently had to re-tool the album to remove the offending two tracks which were replaced by Please Please Me and Ask Me Why. As it turned out this was probably a better track selection for the album anyway. This change was executed in January 1964 & the Version Two album was back in the shops by the 10th of February. Sales of the Version One amounted to 79000 Mono & 1000 Stereo. It can be seen at a glance that the ratio of Stereo to Mono was still very small even in the United States. Condition & Specifics The Sleeve This is the slightly modified second variant of the Version Two Mono sleeve with a comma in Please Please Me on the rear slick but without the small 2 after the word RECORDS at the bottom. The condition is extremely acceptable with just a little light shelfwear evident. The front & rear show minimal discolouration. Curiously although the top seam shows quite a degree of scuffing and an approximately one inch split at the opening there are no other splits & there is no writing anywhere. Tthe back slick remains mostly white & both the bottom seam & spine show little wear with the spine still clearly readable. The Vinyl This is the fourth stereo label variant of the Version Two release. The labels are deep groove and black with silver text. The labels have corrected the Coffin-King credit to Chains. All information in the run off areas of the vinyl is scratched nothing stamped. The matrices read as follows: Side One: S 63-3402-STEREO Side Two: S 63-3403-STEREO Both sides of the record have a circled MR stamped indicating Monarch Records [the pressing plant]. There are also the initials URJ on both sides. The condition of the vinyl remains acceptable though far from mint. Side two seems to have had a greater deal of play than side one. Both sides evidence some scuffs some heavier than others with some axial markings visible through some tracks. The most notable mark falls across the beginning of Do You Want To Know A Secret so we playtested it. Everything that you would expect to hear was missing. No significant background noise no irritating clicks no burring of the tracks. I have no problem in saying that this album plays well above its weight as an excellent condition copy sonically even if it remains VG-/VG visually! This is a very very rare album indeed.
