It is a bit time consuming, because you have to stop and start between tracks, otherwise you get one long track per side, and cannot select the separate songs. Saw this gizmo, and ordered it. Using an SD micro in a USB flash stick gave impressive results. Even scratchy album tracks came out in full stereo on my MP3 player. A remarkable product I can fully recommend. I was very impressed with this unit and it gave excellent results. There was a misprint in the instruction book where the wrong cable was named, but it was easy to spot the mistake. In any case, an amendment note was sent with the booklet. I was recording tapes from my hifi unit, and I had the choice of recording either from the audio out socket the back of the amplifier or the headphones socket at the front. As there was a tangle of cables at the back of my hifi, I opted for the headphones socket. I had to attach a 6.35mm headphone adaptor to the end of the cable because the one supplied had a 3.5mm end, but this was no problem because I already had one. Also, the headphones that come with the unit are rubbish, but I had several spare ones. It is very time consuming if you want to have individual tracks which you can then rename, rather than having just one long file, because you have to stop/restart between tracks, which is why this review has lost a star. I recorded an initial batch of 50 tracks, then copied them to Windows Media Player where I could name the tracks and artists and sort them into albums/playlists ready for my MP3 player. I then synced them my MP3 player where I listened to them through decent quality headphones. The sound quality was superb – crystal clear. This could be because the original recordings were made on my hifi and were of excellent quality, or the playback/recording was done through my hifi, or because I was listening through decent headphones, or a combination of all three, but I cannot fault the sound quality. I have not yet tried it with my vinyl records, but as the process will be exactly the same, i can’t see why the results won’t be equally good. Very pleased with this reasonably priced gizmo. Most of the tapes are classical stuff and I’m impressed by the quality – which seems to be just as good if not better than the tapes. (Though I’m not a music buff). Very easy to use by connecting to the headphone socket of your cd/cassette player and adjusting the volume. Files are stored on either memory stick or sd card. You do need to use your computer to name the files. You can also use it to record from the radio. You don’t need to be any kind of expert to use this with good results – it’s very straightforward. Despite being a very light and portable unit this certainly produces the results. Even my 1970s tapes come up sounding good. To achieve a suitable level of volume for the transfer, check carefully on output machine. My first attempt was too quiet. With such old music being transferred there is inevitably background noise but if required this can be edited using free computer software. If you want to separate tracks when copying from a tape machine or minidisk, drop pause button at end of track and then press stop button on encoder. Wait couple of seconds. Reverse process to start new track. Wait for usb signal to flash before releasing pause button. While this may sound complicated, it becomes easy in practice. That way you do not get the noise of the output source stop button onto your transfer. The control buttons on the machine are a little on the small side but the lighted display is clear. Instructions are reasonable but take a second reading to become clear. One thing – it only uses 4gb memory stick. Sometimes these are a little more difficult to get now. But you can even play your new recordings through the UBS socket in some televisions! As I have a huge collection of tapes and lps gathering dust in the attic, and todays music leaves a lot to be desired when compared to Clapton, Led Zeppelin, the real Fleetwood Mac, etc. I decided to drag them out, dust them down, and get them converted to mp3 so that I could listen again on modern equipment without having to drag about suitcases of cds. This gizmo is perfect for the job. Once you take a wee bit of time getting sound output right on your cassette player or turntable, songs are converted no problem to mp3. If you really want to get close to cd quality sound for a car or home system, download an audio editor like audacity, and if you take the time, can get the finished result very close to cd quality after burning the finished mp3 to cd. I have just finished converting some old Bad Company tapes, and the finished result is better than the original tapes. Hard to believe, but true. The end result is that this gizmo can pay for itself after 2 or 3 conversions, then it’s onto free classic oldies from then on. Wish I had found this earlier, would thoroughly recommend it. I wanted a simple stand-alone tape-to-mp3 converter and this is just the thing! It comes with mains adaptor, earphones and necessary leads and is very light and compact. Having read the small print! Manual carefully it is easy to use with good sound reproduction. Setting the sound level for recording is straightforward enough. The device is very versatile recording from various sound sources. So far I have only transferred from tape but feel confident about my vinyl. However, be careful when recording for the first time onto a USB stick – and use a new stick or else one of your own having your deleted all files. Otherwise you may think tracks have not been recorded because the device displays’no file’ when reading the USB to play back when in fact the tracks were recorded as shown on your PC/laptop. You do still need to use your PC/laptop for saving to hard drive/labelling tracks/transferring to your mp3 etc but that is expected – the great thing is not to have to use complicated software like Audacity etc. My only criticism so far is that when recording onto a USB stick, files are simply numbered without apparently being able to set up folders. The manual does not explain how to do this but I found you can set up labelled folders on your stick using your PC/laptop when naming/labelling tracks etc. HOWEVER, when the stick is plugged into the device the folders appear simply as AU (the main AUX folder for files not stored in a folder) followed by FO1, FO2 etc, and numbered tracks in each folder. This is not a serious problem as one usually transfers the tracks and folders onto one’s mp3 where they display as you made them. Please see my other items for sale!
