Acetates are not like pressed vinyl records. They are made of an aluminium plate coated with a cellulose-based lacquer and processed directly from the master tape using a cutting lathe. They are expensive and fragile, and cutting requires time and expertise. Three types of acetates exist. Studio/Playback acetates , usually cut during the recording sessions to evaluate the song or for the manager to look for a record label or transfer as demo samples to existing record company for evaluation/feedback. These often contain alternate versions and usually only a handful are cut. Mastering/Reference acetates , usually cut at the record company for internal evaluation purposes. These sometimes contain alternate mixes or previously unreleaed material (like this one); and. Production acetates , these are cut to produce the stampers/matrices, thus contain finished songs as released and most are destroyed during the process.
