Analogue Productions presents its first UHQR title Jimi Hendrix’s 1967 masterpiece, Axis: Bold As Love, in both stereo and mono versions. This UHQR is newly remastered by Bernie Grundman from the original analog master tapes. Each UHQR will be pressed at Acoustic Sounds’ industry-leading pressing plant Quality Record Pressings (QRP) using hand-selected Clarity Vinyl® on a manual Finebilt press with attention paid to every single detail of every single record. The 200-gram records will feature the same flat profile that helped to make the original UHQR so desirable. From the lead-in groove to the run-out groove, there is no pitch to the profile, allowing the customer’s stylus to play truly perpendicular to the grooves from edge to center. Clarity Vinyl® allows for the purest possible pressing and the most visually stunning presentation. Every UHQR will be hand inspected upon pressing completion, and only the truly flawless will be allowed to go to market. Each UHQR will be packaged in a deluxe box and will include a booklet detailing the entire process of making a UHQR along with a hand-signed certificate of inspection. This will be a truly deluxe, collectible product. Each Axis UHQR will be available as two versions: mono and stereo. The stereo release will be limited to 5,000 copies, while the mono release will be limited to 1,500 copies. The deluxe box will be gold foil numbered. Axis: Bold As Love, the sensational sophomore release of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, showcased Hendrix’s expansive experimentation while acknowledging his early R&B and soul music influences. The album features classics such as “Spanish Castle Magic, ” “Little Wing, ” “Castles Made Of Sand, ” and If 6 Was 9. For those Jimi Hendrix fans who collect and prefer his many vinyl album releases, an original mono copy of Axis: Bold As Love remains the coin of the realm. Mono vinyl pressings of both Are You Experienced and Axis: Bold As Love are significant because they are not only difficult to find in premium condition but they also feature discrete mixes made specifically for monophonic release, originally created by producer Chas Chandler, Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Kramer. For this mono edition of Axis, Bernie Grundman’s Los Angeles mastering facility was utilized, using a specially equipped Studer tape machine outfitted with a full track mono head block. The machine has also been refitted with vintage Ampex 350 tube electronics. These technical alterations provided the closest possible approximation of the original 1967 Track Records mono mastering process. The edition also features the original gatefold sleeve artwork. Grundman cut the lacquers for the edition; the plating at QRP was directed by Gary Salstrom, master plating technician and QRP general manager. The Axis: Bold As Love UHQRTM will include a 16-page booklet featuring recording information from the sessions at Olympic Studios in London and an essay written by Brad Tolinski, former editor of Guitar World Magazine. As Rolling Stone states, Jimi Hendrix was the most innovative instrumental genius the rock era produced, a wizard guitar player whose sense of technique never overwhelmed the blues and rock’n’ roll spirit that was the underpinning of his genius. He improvised with the fervor of a born jazzman; he philosophized like the most cosmic rocker, but ultimately his basics were rooted in soul, a reflection of the chitlin circuit, where he cut his teeth. Producing an acetate record or more accurately a lacquer coated disc: The acetate is an intermediate stage prior to the production of the master disc and is used for test purposes to assess the sound transfer from the master tapes to vinyl. If a sound or mix is rejected then the acetate pressed has the potential to be a unique item as there are never many copies of acetates produced, usually no more than 10 and as such are highly sought after. The acetate is usually an aluminium disc that is covered in a thin coating of nitrocellulose lacquer that has the sound groove, from the master tape, cut into it using a “lathe”. They come in various sizes including 7″, 10″, 12″ and 14″. To the left shows the cutting head on the lathe, which is like a record player needle but in reverse. The sound is passed through the sapphire cutting stylus which etches the soft lacquer, by moving up and down, left and right, tracing out an exact waveform representation of the music. The lacquer is soft and thin and repeated playing of the acetate will degredate the sound. They are manufactured for one purpose and that is for quality control and not repeated playing. Next is the plating and pressing processes. At the pressing plant, stampers (or plates) have to be created from the acetates. Each acetate is coated with a thin layer of silver nitrate and washed in stannous chloride which is then electro-plated with nickel. Once this has set the two are seperated and the plate produced will be a negative of the acetate with ridges instead of grooves. This plate is called the “father plate” or the “master plate”, which is then oxidised, plated again and when set the two discs are seperated, this time producing a “mother plate”. The “mother plate” is an exact replica of the lacquer acetate that was originally brought into the plant and is used to check for any errors in the plating process. From this “mother plate” further “father plates” are created using the above process and these plates are known as the stamper plates as they are the ones that press the actual records out. This lengthy process is gone through as the stamper plates wear out after so many pressings and with having a metal “mother plate” on the shelf this enables as many “father plates” to be pressed as required. REPRISE 6261 MEGA RARE MONSTER PSYCH LP MONO WLP PROMO NICE COVER & VINYL CONDITION. THE LP COVER: As the photos confirm, given its age and scarcity, this is a really nice one! Rarely are these early Rock LP’s kept in this condition. It does show multiple points of wear and usage which will be pointed out here. The front cover looks very nice. Some wear and small spots of wrinkling but the front presents well. The back side has a notable scratch mark near the center. Also there is a small circle sticker near the upper right corner which could probably be removed easily but no attempt was made to do so. The multiple photos will assist you in judging all cover condition issues. The spine is faded, and worn but it is readable and appears intact. The wear along the top edge is not so good and there is a 3 split near the opening and a similar one on the bottom near the opening. Also the disc is contained in a new generic inner sleeve. THIS LP VINYL: This is a nice but not perfect copy. The primary value is in the rarity of a promo copy of this particular LP. The record was examined closely and there are visible scratches and storage scuffing. There is very little evidence of spindle scarring which is rare. The vinyl is glossy and clean. We sampled the audio, listening to many of the tracks in their entirety. The spacing between tracks produced some noise but no skips. Popping and surface noise might be detected but it will be minimal. OUR PRACTICES AND POLICIES: Most records are visually inspected and then washed and cleaned. Higher valued 45 records will include audio samples of the exact record being listed. Our photos are also original ones of the exact item. We do not always listen or grade but we do offer as much visible information as possible. JImi Hendrix Electric Ladyland UK 1st Press Blue’Ghost Text’ Withdrawn Version! This is a genuine 1st pressing of The Jimi Hendrix Experience with blue text and the extraordinarily rare’Ghost Text’ sleeve that has a completely different track list that never made release, this is then over-printed with the blue text (just on the track listing – not on the’Track Records’ logo), leaving the just readable trace of the fabled track listing below. Now – as I have said before I don’t want to lift the lid on the whole blue/white 1st press debate, I know that the white text pressings/big Noel and Mitch were the first pressings, then blue (sort of later 1st) then white.. However this trumps them all because it is recognised that this copy is the ultra-rare blue before the white ones. So early it has a completely different track listing on it that was changed after the initial run and so had to be over-printed. The blue was there possibly as an artefact of the over-printing process. This copy is very clean overall, the vinyl surface is clean as are the labels. There are numerous fine hairlines and’polishing’ swirls visible in good light however these don’t have a substantial effect and the sound is very good indeed, very sharp and dynamic with just light noise audible between tracks or on the quiet passages. There are no heavier marks or scratches anywhere apart from a couple of more visible lines on side C – though these are superficial and can’t be individually heard and there is certainly nothing that can be felt. This is a very straight copy. The sleeve is also very good and has great gloss and no notable damage, it is completely intact, no tears, no splits, no writing. All the matrices are A1/B1 except for the well known obliterated’C’ matrix. This comes complete with it’s original (I presume) 800513 &973939 Patent No. Inners – the text on these are blue on one and very dark blue or black on the other, I don’t know the reason for this difference. One has side-splits but is still useable. I will include two additional very nice Emitex sleeves so that the originals need not be used again and can be preserved. Overall this is a very good copy that looks very good and sounds great, any hairlines are very fine and these early heavily grooved records can stand up to fine lines very well and this is a good example of that. This is definitely a very high VG and is close to VG+ by my gradings which are generally conservative it was listed as VG++ when I bought it! And certainly sounds like a VG+ to listen to for the most part, this is a great listen and a very good looking rare piece of rock history and possibly one of the very first copies of Electric Ladyland ever produced. Please look carefully at the photos – it is hard to capture with a camera but I have attempted to photograph the’Ghost’ track listing and it can be seen in the photos! GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc. FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced. POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
