The Velvet Underground & Nico is the debut album by the American rock band the Velvet Underground and German singer Nico, released in March 1967 through Verve Records. It was recorded in 1966 while the band were featured on Andy Warhol’s Exploding Plastic Inevitable tour. The album features experimental performance sensibilities and controversial lyrical topics, including drug abuse, prostitution, sadomasochism and sexual deviancy. THE SCALE IS AS FOLLOWS. 10: MINT (M), Pristine, Looks as if it just came off the manufacturing line, also listed as New, Mint Sealed/Unopened. 9: NEAR MINT (NM), Looks as if it just came from a store and was opened for the first time, maybe played a few times if ever, no evidence of play or wear whatsoever. 8: EXCELLENT (EX), also listed as VERY GOOD PLUS PLUS (VG++), LP may have a faint surface mark or two barring it from being truly Near Mint, but sound quality will not be affected at all, cover sleeve is just short of Near Mint, often used for cover sleeves in Shrink, or with no ringwear or staining or easily visible flaws whatsoever, seams and spine fully intact. Holy Grail original 1st Pressing! This is the original first state pressing, with the Eric Emerson torso back cover. Subsequent (2nd State) releases had a sticker, covering the offending image, whereas third state covers had Emerson airbrushed out of the image. Partial banana peel OK, almost completely peeled! , The cover presents beautifully. Hint of ring wear, along with a crease on the front, and some minor splitting on the top (about 3 inches). Inner gatefold presents beautifully. Please do see the images, and if you would like more pictures, just let me know. OK, this is not a pristine record. Spot played every track, and while there are numerous pops and cracks, I did not hear any skips or jumps; played through fine on my vintage V15 Type IV. BACKGROUND NOISE ON QUIETER SECTIONS IS QUITE EVIDENT. True original first 1st press mono produced by Andy Warhol 1967. Andy Warhol managed the Velvet Underground (although there is certainly some disagreement on exactly how much managing he did), and also created the album cover featuring a silkscreen banana. Album is #13 on Rolling Stones greatest albums of all time. This is an essential record for the Warhol or Lou Reed or Velvet Underground fan! Recorded in’66 during Andy Warhol’s multimedia event tour, The Velvet Underground & Nico would gain notoriety for its experimentalist performance sensibilities, as well as its focus on controversial subject matter expressed in many of their songs. Theirs was the dim world of drugs and sexual perversion, of heroin addiction and the desperate loss of hope that goes with it. Their concern was with death and violence… Oozing evil and lubricity, they made every other group look like kid stuff, and they made a lot of people nervous… There is no word for their sound but sometimes it seems as if a presence has taken it over, perhaps even His Satanic Majesty himself. You can easily imagine someone performing black masses with the Velvet Undergrounds albums. Not for the kiddies. Their world view was dark and nihilistic at a time when everyone else was singing about peace and flowers… The Doors (whose first album was a hit when Velvet Underground & Nico was released) had a darker vision than The Velvet Underground! Even Jefferson Airplane, whose Surrealistic Pillow LP defined for the time capsules the romance of the Hippie Moment, didnt turn a blind eye to the dark side of the counterculture– and the Airplane and The Doors were the most popular bands in America during the Velvets time. The Velvet Underground & Nico (the latter being a Warhol-recommended “chanteuse” who departed after the album was released to pursue an even more quixotic solo career) does function as a kind of “map of their music” (to paraphrase The Doors description of their own debut LP). The overall impression created is dark, noisy, more than a little paranoid and seemingly amoral (as opposed to immoral)– “Heroin” makes a point of being neither for nor against, but simply about ; similarly, no specific judgment is passed upon the characters in songs like “Im Waiting For The Man” and Venus In Furs. ” The album concludes with “The Black Angels Death Song” and “European Son, likably self-indulgent exercises in sonic (and verbal) envelope-pushing. CONDITION : The Cover : rated: NEAR M- beautiful cover; note the fragile banana skin which is rated “EX” (excellent) is all in-tact; all there, complete, but upon close inspection the top stem of the skin has the usual crack line, though really hard to see and otherwise looks great! The back cover with torso is graded = a really sought after M- TOP COPY , hard to find any better, no wear per usual = 51 years of age! The insides gatefold are clean as well, rated M- see photos. This is legendary Warhol art at its best and most famous! The gatefold has no bends, no split seams, no cut corners, no saw marks, no writing and no fading.. The Vinyl : still has lots of shine; rated: CLEAN, near M- what a full-of-shine beauty! No marks per the usual original luckily found! Expect UP-GRADE enjoyable clean audio all the way. Both (mono) Verve labels are very clean – no spindle marks etc. A cool addition to anyone’s music library! SEE: SELLERS OTher items for similar cool sounds for “head” people. All imperfections are noted both cover & record. IF you have a problem PLEASE let us solve. GRADING SCALE: M, M-, EX, VG++, VG+, VG, VG. M Completely clean, no marks. VG++ Glossy with minimal scuffing or light mark playing very nice, clean. VG+ a bit more scuff or markls still plays well with very minimal surface at worse. VG more marks/scratches only minor, nothing deep, no loud clicks or pops. This grade is abused by many, VG here does not mean “trashed”. VG- surface noise present, will not have skips or jumps. This LP is from a collection I acquired from the friend of a fastidious collector who passed away over 30 years ago The friend inherited them & stored them away for that entire time. The friend told me he hasn’t touched them at all for that entire time & looking at this collection I totally believe him. This LP looks like it was barely played by the original owner, if at all. The cover has very minor issues which i’ve described in greter detail below. The Velvet Underground & Nico – OG 1968 Verve Vinyl LP – Intact Banana Peel – NM. The Velvet Underground & Nico. Verve Records V6-5008 / US 1968 (Airbrushed Torso Version). A V6-5008 SIDE-1 MGS-558 REV 21 Block-shaped’S’ B V6-5008 SIDE-2 MGS-559 21 Block-shaped’S. I’m not 100% sure it’s “21” in the runout. One or both could be a “31”. It’s hard to tell. The cover is in superb condition. Bright and clean with a very light discoloration in the spine area. Crisp spine & edges except for a few very light dings in the opening of the back flap of the gate-fold. The gate-fold inside is very close to pristine. A light partial record imprint on the front & back cover. The peel is lifted a very slight bit at the top of the stem. It looks like the previous owner started to peel it & thought better of it or maybe it just got snagged a little bit on something. The banana peel is intact but a little off set so I originally thought it was carefully peeled off and put back on in the offset position, but I was talking to a trusted audiophile friend of mine and he assured me that this was next to impossible because they tear so easily and it probably came from the plant like that. Comes with original Verve inner sleeve which is also in superb condition with no splits. The vinyl looks in pristine shape viewed under bright light. Looks untouched with a high sheen and Crisp, Clean labels with no spindle marks. Spot checked and it sounds Super Clean.
