Smashing Pumpkins were nominated for five additional 1997 Grammys for MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS. The album was nominated for Album Of The Year and Best Alternative Music Performance; “1979” was nominated for Record Of The Year and Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal; and the title track was nominated for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. For all the criticisms levied on head Pumpkin Billy Corgan, one thing he can’t be accused of is being narrow in his artistic vision. On the breakthrough SIAMESE DREAM, he and co-producer Butch Vig built a landscape of layered, corrosive guitars that shimmered brighter with each additional glance. On MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS, Corgan turns his eye to the dreariness of modern existence and comes up with a broad alterna-rock opus that plays out like an offspring of Roger Waters and Kurt Cobain–verbose and angst-ridden, bleak in its view, cathartic in nature. With its two distinctly titled song-cycles and overture-like title track, there is no doubt that MELLON COLLIE is meant to be approached as a concept album, and Corgan’s lyrical musings only reiterate the point. The songs explore alienation in the physical and spiritual worlds, generally concluding that it can seldom be overcome. Only the early “Tonight, Tonight” offers a glimmer of hope (“believe that life can change, that you’re not stuck in vain”), on the wings of a soaring, string-laden production. Far more constant are spiritually depleting images of “the world [as a] vampire, sent to drain” (“Bullet With Butterfly Wings”), of love as “suicide” (“Bodies'”) and of heaven’s unresponsiveness (“Zero”). The constant din of guitars that illuminated GISH and SIAMESE DREAM has been replaced with a varied sonic palette that reflects MELLON COLLIE’s operatic nature. Piano interludes connect the opening title track and the closing “Farewell And Goodnight”; harps, harpsichords and other heavenly sounds trim “Cupid De Locke”; synthetic, Cars-like drums and a general faux-New Wave feel spur on “1979”; and X. Explodes with distorted guitar wallops and yelped vocals that scream post-modern confusion. The 28 tracks are as motley and disconcerting as the world they describe, and MELLON COLLIE is a dispiriting glimpse from the eyes of a man whose last vestiges of hope seem lost. The Smiths Complete (Deluxe edition) #1113 boxset from 2011

This is the Deluxe boxset containing all CD, LP (12″), singles (7″) and the DVD. The box has been opened per the photographs however none of the individual contents have been opened or touched let alone played. Is a box set released by British band. On 26 September 2011. Standard versions contain their four studio albums The Smiths. The Queen Is Dead. Strangeways, Here We Come. , a live album Rank. And three compilations Hatful of Hollow. The World Won’t Listen. Over 8 CDs or 8 LPs. A deluxe version contains the albums on both CD and LP formats as well as 25 7 vinyl singles and a DVD. Despite its name, this remastered compilation is not truly a complete source of Smiths recordings as several officially released songs are missing on both the standard CD and LP versions. This includes the live recording of “Handsome Devil, ” the studio versions of “Accept Yourself” and “Wonderful Woman”, the group’s three Sandie Shaw collaborations (“Hand in Glove”, “I Don’t Owe You Anything”, & “Jeane”), the live tracks from the “That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore” single, the studio version of “The Draize Train”, “Work is a Four-Letter Word”, “I Keep Mine Hidden”, the live cover of James’ “What’s the World”, the 1987 Peel sessions from the “Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me” single, and the early cello version of “Pretty Girls Make Graves”. The’deluxe version’ contains several of these tracks as part of the 7 vinyl set, but is still missing several studio and live tracks. The package claims “Each album has been taken back to original tape sources and remastered by master-engineer Frank Arkwright, assisted by Johnny Marr at the Metropolis Studios in London”. The CD version is presented “in VINYL REPLICA sleeves”, including the restored. Due to its nature the package did not have an A&R so to speak but it was project managed by Gary Lancaster who also worked on’Total’ by. And several other Warner Music Group releases. (As is referenced in the accompanying book within the package). Marr said of the reissues, which were released on both CD and 12″ vinyl, “I’m very happy that the remastered versions of The Smiths albums are finally coming out. I wanted to get them sounding right and remove any processing so that they now sound as they did when they were originally made. I’m pleased with the results. (NME, July 28, 2011 13:33). Vinyl LP Record Boxset. Cover/Sleeve Grade: 7 (VG+). LP/Vinyl Grade: 8.5 (NM-). Label Grade: 8 (EX). Other Notes: 1995 US Boxset with All Inserts. The mono mixes of the songs were done at a different time and are different than the stereo mixes. This mono release was simultaneous with the release of the stereo version. Tower Records altered the songs on the album from the original British release to include their single See Emily Play, and dropped the songs’Astronomy Domine’,’Flaming’ and’Bike’ from the record. Also, names of the songs’Pow R. , and’Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk’ are misspelled. Thanks for shopping at our Classic Vinyl store!
