THE ROLLING STONES Mobile Fidelity MFSL BIG BOX 11 Classic ABKCO LP's AUDIOPHILE
11 Classic Stones LP’s pressed on “JVC Super Vinyl” for a premium Audiophile sound. Housed in a gorgeous hard-case wooden box with The Rolling Stones engraved in red and a nice ball-lock to close it up when not in use. All LP’s are housed in thick individual red sleeves with a thicker cardboard sleeve AND inner poly-sleeves. Felt box bottom so it stays firm and does not scratch any surface. Includes The “Geo-Disc”, an LP-sized precision cartridge alignment system, housed in custom sleeve in its own cover. Still after all these years, THE final word on Rolling Stones re-issue pressings. Includes these classic albums: The Rolling Stones, 12 x 5, Out Of Our Heads, Aftermath, Between The Buttons, Their Satanic Majesties Request, Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed and Get Yer Ya’s Ya’s OutHot Rocks (2 LP’s). The original master Rolling Stones tapes, from which the music in THE ROLLING STONES collection was transferred, were meticulously tracked-down by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab in both England and America. Altogether, more than 60 boxes of recording tapes were examined and auditioned, until the genuine original masters were discovered. The first three albums (“The Rolling Stones”, “12×5″, and “Out Of Our Heads”) were originally recorded in the Mono format, while the next six albums were recorded in true Stereo. “Hot Rocks” is a compilation of Mono and Stereo tracks that MFSL transferred from the original master tapes… Carefully spliced together by MFSL’s engineers who exclusively utilized the original (British) Decca master recording tapes, except for “12×5″ and “Out Of Our Heads”, which were originally recorded in America and first released by London Records. PLEASE READ Geo Disc included but No Booklet w/ LP art. VINYL LPs are NEAR MINT and look unplayed. Box & jackets overall are in EX shape with a few marks & flecks on box top and sides and a few lt blemishes on 3 or 4 of the red jackets. Box clasp and hinge are rigid & intact. A few lt marks on Geo-Disc sleeve at bottom. Lt yellowing marks inside LP jacket #1; sm creases at rear of red ya-ya jacket (see photos). Tiny cutout punch lower rt box corner, clasp-side. We recommend viewing this listing on a PC to see detail in pix; scrolling available thru 10 photos. THE ROLLING STONES Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs (1984) – Original Master Recordings series #RC-1. BEATLES THE COLLECTION 14 VINYL LP AUDIOPHILE BOX SET MFSL HAND NUMBERED #2484. THE BEATLES 14 LP BOX SET. MOBILE FIDELITY SOUND LABS RECORDS. Fourteen Half Speed Original Master Recording LPs in their UK formats with the vinyl records pressed in Japan. Inside the box, each LP has a custom cover that replaces the original stock cover with a photograph of the EMI master tape boxes and log sheets. Also included is a color booklet that shows the original LP covers plus a Certificate Of Authenticity inside the front cover. The copy we are offering here has the COA hand signed by the President of MFSL and has the unique Limited Edition hand written number of #2484 beside the signature. What is included inside the box are the fourteen record covers, fourteen records, fourteen original anti-static record sleeves, fourteen original folded custom poster board inserts that house the inner sleeves inside the covers, a thick booklet with COA inside the front cover, MFSL Summer/Fall 1982 catalog, and MFSL Geo-Disc (which can be used to align your turntable, if you wish). All 14 records look like they have hardly ever been played or handled. We carefully inspected each and every LP, and they are all beautiful and grade at lowest better than NM and most are stone M. The record covers grade between EX+ and NM. The Geo-Disc cover is thick and grades EX, an does the Geo-Disc itself. The booklet is completely intact and inside looks great, although the front and back outside pages have minor wear and some surface scratching on the thick paper stock material. The MFSL 1982 catalog has some crinkling and the last page is torn in the top right corner. The box itself is completely intact with a well working latch and hinges that open and close it. The box has a few rubs, scuffs and light dings here and there and around the edges, and one light stain measuring about 1 inch by 1 inch near the bottom on one side. With the exception of sealed LP’s, all LP’s are removed from their outer sleeves to prevent seam splitting. Upon request, we will give your sealed LP’s the same treatment. All records are carefully graded. In an attempt to give customers an accurate impression of condition rather than adhere to somewhat arbitrary criteria, The Great Escape gives an “overall presentation” grade; we do not give a “listening” grade. Our vinyl listings are supplemented when necessary with additional remarks. For example: where some dealers will not allow a cut corner on an otherwise near mint jacket (often automatically relegating it to a VG+ at best), we may grade such a record as NM and note the cut-out mark (thereby letting you know what it “really” looks like: a near-perfect record with a cut corner). LPs are graded cover first, followed by the grade for the vinyl. We describe all items to the best of our ability and knowledge, and we image everything that is included for each listing. Domestic all 50 states, U. Territories, APO/FPO & P. International Buyers – Please Note. Listing and template services provided by inkFrog. The item “BEATLES THE COLLECTION 14 VINYL LP AUDIOPHILE BOX SET MFSL HAND NUMBERED #2484″ is in sale since Wednesday, May 8, 2019. This item is in the category “Music\Records”. The record we are offering here is the ultimate pressing of Dark Side Of The Moon. Released in 1981, this is the UHQR (“Ultra High Quality Record”) version of the record, pressed by MFSL. Only 5000 of these were made and the copy we are offering here comes with its hand numbered Certificate Of Authenticity, which is hand-numbered #3681 and signed by Herbert A. Belkin, President of Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab. The box also includes the MFSL Technical Specifications Manual, the top and bottom foam inserts, the UHQR LP jacket, the folded poster board that goes inside the jacket, and the paper and plastic anti-static inner sleeve. OUTER BOX: The only thing keeping the outer box from grading VG+ is a split on the bottom right seam on the top part of the box, which measures less than 1 inch. The actual UHQR LP jacket grades EX. All of the other inside inserts grade NM to M. VINYL: The record is a beauty and grades NM. DEAD WAX (Side 1): MFSL 1 017 A 2 2 SR 2 U 223. DEAD WAX (Side 2): MFSL 1 017 B 2 1 SR 2 U 216. With the exception of sealed LP’s, all LP’s are removed from their outer sleeves to prevent seam splitting. Upon request, we will give your sealed LP’s the same treatment. Rare Vintage Audiophile Audio JVC CD-4 Disc Demodulator for Vinyl Records. Rare: JVC 4 channel CD-4 disk Demodulator Quadraphonic Turntable Amplifier (1970’s). Quadraphonic sound (4-channel) was the predecessor of our modern day “surround sound”. It was amazing for its time. The first vinyl’s were classical exposes, with a few rock, folk and big band disks introduced. Many were remakes of existing albums… Dark Side of the Moon, Santana Abraxas, etc. Known commonly as CD-4. A CD-4 turntable was necessary, possessing a quad cartridge. A CD-4 demodulator and quadraphonic receiver were also required, all of which, could cost thousands of dollars, even in 1972. Quality Japanese electronics: Built in Japan used for making quadraphonic sound from your turntable and then feeds it into your 4 channel amp. Authentic sound: A must for those Audiophiles serious about their collection of vinyl records. Perfect for encoding 4 channel records. Watch on Youtube how this model works. The item “Rare Vintage Audiophile JVC CD-4 Disc Demodulator Vinyl Records (TESTED/WORKING)” is in sale since Friday, December 23, 2016. No Posters And Postcard Originally Issued For This Release. Discography About The Record. Pink Floyd’s most successful and singularly defining album is here to stay. With lush, immaculate production and sweeping instrumentals, The Dark Side of the Moon is unrivaled in sonic brilliance. The complex textures found within have captivated audiophiles for over thirty years. With lyrics about seemingly mundane details set against dreamy, atmospheric backdrops, the songs on The Dark Side of the Moon achieve a truly emotional response. Performances are not virtuosic, but they are brilliant nonetheless and were likewise brilliantly recorded. Abbey Road Studios engineer Alan Parsons and Pink Floyd made use of some of the most advanced techniques available at the time to craft a sound that was innovative yet entirely classic, by any sense of the word. Swirling organs, mellow drums, and spacious guitars are signature sounds that have been inextricably linked with Pink Floyd’s magnificent songwriting. Only 25 years ago, and with the highs (and lows) of the Buffalo Springfield, CSN&Y and three solo albums under his belt, Neil went home to Canada and delivered a majestic set of just voice and either flat-top guitar or piano. Bootlegged recordings of this tour are infamous among fans and have been passed around for decades. In 2006, Neil Young delivered another hit album, Living With War, and toured with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Thirty-six years earlier, in 1970, Young toured with CSN&Y and released his platinum album Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, after which he performed a series of shows at New York Citys then-new Fillmore East with his band Crazy Horse. That concert finally made its official debut in the annals of rock history with Live At The Fillmore East, and the circle is unbroken for one of rocks greatest singer-songwriters. The original release charted Top 15 and three Grammy® nominations, including for Best Rock Album, and the music is now available on vinyl. Live At The Fillmore East includes an extended Down By The River and a 16-minute Cowgirl In The Sand (which has previously appeared only on a 90s import). Country barnburner Come On Baby Lets Go Downtown would later be heard on 1975s Tonights The Night live album. NEIL YOUNG PRAIRIE WIND Pressed on 200 gram vinyl 2 LP SET by CLASSIC RECORDS! Prairie Wind is an adventure akin to taking a drive through one’s own life stopping off to revisit old friends and loved ones along the way. For Neil Young fans this album delivers songs that instantly stick in your mind as familiar. Tunes like “Falling Off The Face Of The Earth” and “The Painter” evoke thoughts of introspection that remind us of our humanity and its ultimate fragility. “No Wonder” feels like a early 70’s anthem applied to more recent events while “Far From Home”, with its bluesy harmonic interludes and horn accompaniment, tells a story of fond reminiscence of childhood and growing up. “It’s A Dream” incites one to confront how fleeting our surroundings are and , in a sense, the desire to have them remain as more than “just a memory without anywhere to stay”. The title track weaves the same bluesy harmonica and horn section with a group backup singers to create an eerie and evocative scene. Neil Young has created in “Here for You” possibly the ultimate love song with a pace and harmonica rifts reminiscent of Bob Dylan in the mid 60’s if he’d been in Nashville. “This Old Guitar” is a masterful story of life that is impossible not to relate to in one way or another and features a great backing vocal from Emmy Lou Harris making this tune even more special. “He Was King” is clearly a tribute to Elvis which harkens back to an easier time. The final track “When God Made Me” asks the questions about our humanity we all ponder at some time in our lives. This is an album, dedicated to his father that Neil Young made for himself, his friends and family and is giving, as a gift, to the rest of us. We can all benefit from the insights contained here and possibly gain some important perspectives on life – thanks Neil. Classic Records, in cooperation with Reprise Records and Neil Young are proud to present “Prairie Wind” as a Deluxe 2 LP gatefold edition. Included is an 18 page 12″ x 12″ booklet with lyrics and photos printed with soy based inks on paper that is from sustainable forests and Rain Forest Alliance certified. The sound is, to put it bluntly, without compare and sets a new standard for sonic achievement. Is this Grammy worthy? You bet it is. Pressed on 200 gram vinyl by CLASSIC RECORDS! LIVING WITH WAR IN THE BEGINNINGS. A stripped-down, unpolished version of 2006s Living With War, with choir and overdubs having been jettisoned, delivers an even more powerful, jacked-up conduit of the message. Recorded live in the studio in only two weeks with sparse musical support, its hardly subtle themes and lyrics (Lets Impeach The President) are Youngs personal shock and awe, commenting, as he had swiftly done on the 1969 Kent State killings (Ohio), on the political turmoil in the U. And its war on terrorism. The original version fanned the flames and both doves and hawks were glad when it faded from the news. This new version is bound to keep the heat up for some time. Mastered and cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood from the original demo mix master tapes gives this compendium edition a rawer, more edgy sound – similar to other recent NY releases. Additionally, all new gatefold artwork makes this package a natural, must have alternate version of the first release of Living With War in 2006. Features: 200g Super Vinyl Hand Made Selections: 1. After the Garden 2. Living with War 3. The Restless Consumer 4. Shock and Awe 5. Flags of Freedom 7. Let’s Impeach the President 8. Lookin’ for a Leader 9. Excuse me, is this 1969, during the time when Rock bands released an album every nine to twelve months and they were all great? Last summer Neil Young recorded what will likely be remembered as one of his best albums ever in “Prairie Wind” and then eight months later delivers a new protest album that will make, even the most conservative thinkers, rethink the state of the world. Maybe it takes the wisdom of time and experience to drill down to the heart of issues these days instead of the open mindedness of youth as in the past. Instead it is the old man of ROCK AND ROLL that delivers the familiar one two punch that makes people question the course we are on. Regardless of your politics, “Living With War” will rock your world and hit a chord that needs to be struck. A collection of covers recorded in July 2013 with Jack White at White’s Third Man Records in Nashville. Young describes the album as an unheard collection of rediscovered songs from the past recorded on ancient electro-mechanical technology that captures and unleashes the essence of something that could have been gone forever. Young chose songs that have personal meaning for him, such as British folk artist Bert Jansch’s “Needle of Death” (which inspired Young to write 1972’s “Needle and the Damage Done”), Bob Dylan’s “Girl from the North Country, ” Willie Nelson’s “Crazy, ” Don Everly’s “Wonder If I Care as Much, ” Bruce Springsteen’s “My Home Town, ” and many others. The album begins with Neil recording a spoken letter to his late mother, informing her of his personal and present state of affairs, which sets the tone and atmosphere for the duration of the album. Included in the package is a standard 12-inch album version as well as a “direct from the booth” audiophile 12-inch LP. This is the world’s introduction to bare, totally exposed Neil Young. Having left Buffalo Springfield, his collaboration with Stephen Stills, this 1969 solo debut is an album full of brooding but pretty songs including The Loner. Was one of the first solo records by a rock and roll figure. Though his only album not to chart – “The Loner” is the most memorable track – this is the record that bridged what was and what was to be. Marked the launching point of an illustrious solo career. Produced by Young and his longtime associate David Briggs, Young’s solo debut also continued his association with producer/composer/arranger Jack Nitzsche, with whom he had made “Expecting To Fly” on the. Young’s folk-rock instrumentation is augmented by discreet string parts. Also onboard stylistically is the country and western overtones that were present in Buffalo Springfield’s sound. Instrumentation includes a variety of guitars, pianos, organs and strings. Hearing Neil Young’s debut with the context of having heard 40 years worth of his material, it’s exciting and revealing to literally hear him search for and at least partially settle on his voice on this record. Due to back troubles, Young recorded much of this material while wearing a brace, a fact that seems audible in the tension and unease that underlies the friendly, acoustic surface of this superb release. NEIL YOUNG After The Gold Rush UK PRESSED BY SIMPLY VINYL MADE OUT OF PRINT LIMITED EDITION LP. OUT OF PRINT FOR A DECADE. In the 15 months between the release Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and After the Gold Rush , Neil Young issued a series of recordings in different styles that could have prepared his listeners for the differences between the two LPs. But Ohio , a CSNY single, rocked as hard as anything on the second album. After the Gold Rush was recorded with the aid of Nils Lofgren, a 17-year-old unknown whose piano was a major instrument, turning one of the few real rockers, Southern Man (which had unsparing protest lyrics typical of Phil Ochs), into a more stately effort than anything on the previous album and giving a classic tone to the title track, a mystical ballad which featured some of Young’s most imaginative lyrics and became one of his most memorable songs. But much of After the Gold Rush consisted of folk-country love songs, which consolidated the audience Young had earned through his tours and recordings with CSNY; its dark yet hopeful tone matched the tenor of the times in 1970, making it one of the definitive singer/songwriter albums, and it has remained among Young’s major achievements. After the Gold Rush. Only Love Can Break Your Heart. Till the Morning Comes. When You Dance You Can Really Love. I Believe in You. NEIL YOUNG’S Chrome Dreams II. The live album captures this iconic artist during a fascinating time in his career, when he was facing criticism and lawsuits from his then current record company for exploring a more traditionally country sound. You can call me erratic, Young said when asked at the time about his tendency toward musical shape-shifting, but Ive been consistent about it, consistently erratic. Always celebrated for his musical versatility, A Treasure, is akin to a sonic time capsule, instantly transporting the listener to the time and place when it was made. I love this record. Well, he’s done it again. Throughout the last 30+ years, Neil’s made a career out of zigging when people expect him to zag, and Are You Passionate? Following a live album from the 2000 “Friends & Relatives” tour, an acoustic-folk album in “Silver & Gold, ” and spring 2001 studio sessions with Crazy Horse (for a project tentatively titled “Toast”), this one seems to have come out of nowhere. Some have said this album sounds like something out of his eccentric’80s catalog, where the bouncing around from genre to genre was the most pronounced. However, granted that some of those albums have their merits, this one is much stronger on all fronts. Backed by Stax house band Booker T. & The MG’s for most of this album, Neil dives head-first into’60s soul, and you can hear echoes of the old Stax sound in several of the tracks here. The opener, “You’re My Girl, ” is a classic example, referencing a handful of’60s classics but written from the perspective of a man who’s grown up and now faces an increasingly empty nest at home. Neil has explained this during his 2002 concert tour with CSNY as a song he wrote for his daughter, Amber Jean (who also had a song written for her during the’84 International Harvester period), whom he used to drive to school every day and has always loved the motown sound. My favorite cuts on the album come next, in Mr. ” You can see Neil gently swaying back and forth on a stool with “Old Black in his hands as he weaves through both of these tunes, the lyrics of which continue the theme of the reflections of an older man on his storied past. “Don’t Say You Love Me” is another slow-rolling smoothie, and the first of three tracks on this album that were debuted on the 2001 European tour with Crazy Horse. The second is “Goin’ Home, ” which comes to us from the same portion of Neil’s mind as the classics “Like a Hurricane” and Cortez the Killer. This one was an instant classic when performed live, and it’s unfortunate that the studio version (even with the Crazy Horse lineup) lacks a lot of the punch the live version had. “When I Hold You In My Arms” sounds much more like the drifting ballad it was originally (anyone who saw Farm Aid last year on CMT got a preview of this). Lyrically it’s representative of the new direct approach Neil’s taken with his songwriting – you won’t find anything as deep as some of the older albums, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing: this new style fits the music well can you see the lyrics to Ambulance Blues going along with an r&b/soul type of sound? “Two Old Friends” has been another staple in the CSNY setlists of this year, stuck right in between “Long Time Gone” and “Woodstock” – that oughta tell you how confident Neil is about it, and I agree – it’s another of my favorites from the album. “Let’s Roll” works really well in a live concert setting, however I wonder what that will sound like several years down the road. “Ohio” has had a long life and still applies – let’s all hope that “Let’s Roll” won’t. This song has caught a lot of flack from a lot of people – it seems you either love it or you hate it. While I’m not a fan of some of the George W. Bush style lyrics, I still think it’s a decent song, just a little out of place on this album. Overall I think this album will go over well for fans of the Booker T. Sound, as well as anyone who wants to hear Neil doing something different yet again. Far from the days of “Landing On Water” and “Everybody’s Rockin’, ” Neil turns in a beauty here. You’re My Girl. After Neil Young left the California folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield in 1968, he slowly established himself as one of the most influential and idiosyncratic singer/songwriters of his generation. Young’s body of work ranks second only to Bob Dylan in terms of depth, and he was able to sustain his critical reputation, as well as record sales, for a longer period of time than Dylan, partially because of his willfully perverse work ethic. From the beginning of his solo career in the late’60s through to the 21st century, he never stopped writing, recording, and performing; his official catalog only represented a portion of his work, since he kept countless tapes of unreleased songs in his vaults. Just as importantly, Young continually explored new musical territory, from rockabilly and the blues to electronic music. But these stylistic exercises only gained depth when compared to his two primary styles: gentle folk and country-rock, and crushingly loud electric guitar rock, which he frequently recorded with the Californian garage band Crazy Horse. Throughout his career, Young alternated between these two extremes, and both proved equally influential; there were just as many singer/songwriters as there were grunge and country-rock bands claiming to be influenced by Neil Young. Despite his enormous catalog and influence, Young continued to move forward, writing new songs and exploring new music. That restless spirit ensured that he was one of the few rock veterans as vital in his old age as he was in his youth. Born in Toronto, Canada, Neil Young moved to Winnipeg with his mother following her divorce from his sports journalist father. Young began playing music in high school. Not only did he play in garage rock outfits like the Esquires, but he also played in local folk clubs and coffeehouses, where he eventually met Joni Mitchell and Stephen Stills. By 1966, he joined the Mynah Birds, which also featured bassist Bruce Palmer and Rick James. The group recorded an album’s worth of material for Motown, none of which was released at the time. Frustrated by his lack of success, Young moved to Los Angeles in his Pontiac hearse, taking Palmer along as support. Shortly after they arrived in L. They happened to meet Stills, and they formed Buffalo Springfield, who quickly became one of the leaders of the Californian folk-rock scene. Despite the success of Buffalo Springfield, the group was plagued with tension, and Young quit the band several times before finally leaving to become a solo artist in May of 1968. Hiring Elliot Roberts as his manager, Young signed with Reprise Records and released his eponymous debut album in early 1969. By the time the album was released, he had begun playing with a local band called the Rockets, which featured guitarist Danny Whitten, bassist Billy Talbot, and drummer Ralph Molina. Young renamed the group Crazy Horse and had them support him on his second album, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, which was recorded in just two weeks. Featuring such Young staples as “Cinnamon Girl” and “Down by the River, ” the album went gold. Following the completion of the record, he began jamming with Crosby, Stills & Nash, eventually joining the group for their spring 1970 album, Déjà Vu. Although he was now part of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Young continued to record as a solo artist, releasing After the Gold Rush in August, 1970. After the Gold Rush, with its accompanying single “Only Love Can Break Your Heart, ” established Young as a solo star, and fame only increased through his association with CSN&Y. Although Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young were a very successful act, they were also volatile, and they had split by the spring 1971 release of the live Four Way Street. The following year, Young had his first number one album with the mellow country-rock of Harvest, which also featured his first (and only) number one single, Heart of Gold. Instead of embracing his success, he spurned it, following it with the noisy, bleak live film Journey Through the Past. Both the movie and its soundtrack received terrible reviews, as did the live Time Fades Away, an album recorded with the Stray Gators that was released in 1973. Both Journey Through the Past and Time Fades Away signaled that Young was entering a dark period in his life, but they only scratched the surface of his anguish. Inspired by the overdose deaths of Danny Whitten in 1972 and his roadie Bruce Berry the following year, Young wrote and recorded the bleak, druggy Tonight’s the Night late in 1973, but declined to release it at the time. Instead, he released On the Beach, which was nearly as harrowing, in 1974; Tonight’s the Night finally appeared in the spring of 1975. By the time of its release, Young had recovered, as indicated by the record’s hard-rocking follow-up, Zuma, an album recorded with Crazy Horse and released later that year. Young’s focus began to wander in 1976, as he recorded the duet album Long May You Run with Stephen Stills and then abandoned his partner midway through the supporting tour. The following year he recorded the country-rock-oriented American Stars’n Bars, which featured vocals by Nicolette Larson, who was also prominent on 1978’s Comes a Time. Prior to the release of Comes a Time, Young scrapped the country-rock album Homegrown and assembled the triple-album retrospective Decade. At the end of 1978, he embarked on an arena tour called Rust Never Sleeps, which was designed as a showcase for new songs. Half of the concert featured Young solo, the other half featured him with Crazy Horse. That was the pattern that Rust Never Sleeps, released in the summer of 1979, followed. The record was hailed as a comeback, proving that Young was one of the few rock veterans who attacked punk rock head-on. That fall he released the double album Live Rust and the live movie Rust Never Sleeps. Rust Never Sleeps restored Young to his past glory, but he perversely decided to trash his goodwill in 1980 with Hawks & Doves, a collection of acoustic songs that bore the influence of conservative, right-wing politics. In 1981, Young released the heavy rock album Reactor, which received poor reviews. Young decided to push his Geffen contract to the limit, releasing the electronic Trans in January 1983, where his voice was recorded through a computerized vocoder. The album and its accompanying technology-dependent tour were received with bewildered, negative reviews. The rockabilly of Everybody’s Rockin’ (1983) was equally scorned, and Young soon settled into a cult audience for the mid-’80s. Over the course of the mid-’80s, Young released three albums that were all stylistic exercises. In 1985, he released the straight country Old Ways, which was followed by the new wave-tinged Landing on Water the following year. His first album for Reprise was the bluesy, horn-driven This Note’s for You, which was supported by an acclaimed video that satirized rock stars endorsing commercial products. At the end of the year, he recorded a reunion album with Crosby, Stills & Nash called American Dream, which was greeted with savagely negative reviews. American Dream didn’t prepare any observer for the critical and commercial success of 1989’s Freedom, which found Young following the half-acoustic/half-electric blueprint of Rust Never Sleeps to fine results. Around the time of its release, Young became a hip name to drop in indie rock circles, and he was the subject of a tribute record titled The Bridge in 1989. The following year, Young reunited with Crazy Horse for Ragged Glory, a loud, feedback-drenched album that received his strongest reviews since the’70s. For the supporting tour, Young hired the avant rock band Sonic Youth as his opening group, providing them with needed exposure while earning him hip credibility within alternative rock scenes. On the advice of Sonic Youth, Young added the noise collage EP Arc as a bonus to his 1991 live album, Weld. Weld and the Sonic Youth tour helped position Neil Young as an alternative and grunge rock forefather, but he decided to abandon loud music for its 1992 follow-up, Harvest Moon. An explicit sequel to his 1972 breakthrough, Harvest Moon became Young’s biggest hit in years, and he supported the record with an appearance on MTV Unplugged, which was released the following year as an album. Also in 1993, Geffen released the rarities collection Lucky Thirteen. The following year, he released Sleeps with Angels, which was hailed as a masterpiece in some quarters. Following its release, Young began jamming with Pearl Jam, eventually recording an album with the Seattle band in early 1995. The resulting record, Mirror Ball, was released to positive reviews in the summer of 1995, but it wasn’t the commercial blockbuster it was expected to be; due to legal reasons, Pearl Jam’s name was not allowed to be featured on the cover. In the summer of 1996, he reunited with Crazy Horse for Broken Arrow and supported it with a brief tour. That tour was documented in Jim Jarmusch’s 1997 film The Year of the Horse, which was accompanied by a double-disc live album. In 1999, Young reunited with Crosby, Stills & Nash for the first time in a decade, supporting their Looking Forward LP with the supergroup’s first tour in a quarter century. A new solo effort, Silver & Gold, followed in the spring of 2000. In recognition of his 2000 summer tour, Young released the live album Road Rock, Vol. 1 the following fall, showcasing a two-night account of Young’s performance at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado, in September 2000. A DVD version titled Red Rocks Live was issued that December, including 12 tracks initially unavailable on Road Rock, Vol. His next studio project was his most ambitious yet, a concept album about small-town life titled Greendale that he also mounted as a live dramatic tour and indie film. In early 2005, Young was diagnosed with a potentially deadly brain aneurysm. Undergoing treatment didn’t slow him down, however, as he continued to write and record his next project. The acoustically based Prairie Wind appeared in the fall, with the concert film Heart of Gold, based around the album and directed by Jonathan Demme, released in 2006. That year also saw the release of the controversial CD/DVD Living with War, a collection of protest songs against the war in Iraq that featured titles such as “Let’s Impeach the President, ” “Shock and Awe, ” and Lookin’ for a Leader. Restless, prolific, and increasingly self-referential, Young issued Chrome Dreams II late in 2007 and the car-themed Fork in the Road in 2009. Later in 2009, Young finally released the first installment in his long-rumored Archives series, Archives, Vol. 1, a massive first volume that combined over ten CD and DVD discs in a single box. As he was prepping Archives, Vol. 2, Young entered the studio with producer Daniel Lanois and recorded Le Noise, which appeared in the fall of 2010. All done in the classic Harvest style.
